Rectal Prolapse

Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse is a condition in which part or all of the rectum slips out of its normal position within the pelvis and protrudes through the anus.

Symptoms of Rectal Prolapse

  • 1. A bulge or protrusion of tissue through the anus, which may occur during bowel movements or when standing.
  • 2. A sensation of rectal fullness, discomfort, or pain.
  • 3. Mucus discharge or bleeding from the protruded rectum.
  • 4. Constipation or a sensation of incomplete bowel movements.
  • 5. Urinary incontinence in some cases, particularly in women.

Types of Rectal Prolapse

  • It can occur in different forms and vary in severity. There are three types of rectal prolapse:
  • 1. Partial or Mucosal Prolapse
  • 2. Complete Prolapse
  • 3. Internal Prolapse (Intussusception)

Causes of Rectal Prolapse

  • 1. This can occur due to aging, childbirth, chronic constipation, or conditions that strain the muscles.
  • 2. Due to constipation or other bowel issues.
  • 3. In children, rectal prolapse can be a sign of cystic fibrosis.
  • 4. This can occur due to aging, childbirth, chronic constipation, or conditions that strain the muscles.
  • 5. Especially surgeries in the pelvic area.

Diagnosis

  • Diagnosis of rectal prolapse typically involves a physical examination and a detailed medical history. In some cases, imaging studies such as a defecating proctogram, colonoscopy, or MRI may be used to assess the severity and cause of the prolapse.
